En résidence nº4
L’activation du monde

Meredith Root-Bernstein & Noémie Sauve

En résidence is an annual, free publication dedicated to the projects of artists in residence at Crédac. This fourth issue in the collection has been published to mark the residency of artist Noémie Sauve and CNRS researcher Meredith Root-Bernstein, focusing on their project L’activation du monde. This session, devoted to the encounter between art and science, was conducted in collaboration with the Cultural Affairs Department of the City of Ivry-sur-Seine, scientific and technical culture mission.

Gathered in the Crédac research workshop, Noémie Sauve and Meredith Root-Bernstein engaged in a dialogue about the latter’s research on evolution, focusing in particular on the ribosome – the molecule that activates DNA – and its implications for all levels of life, right down to the ecology of environments. Based on the hypothesis that the ribosome is the primary architect of life on Earth, they sought to highlight the dynamism, instability and freedom of the forms taken by life when it is activated, far from the static representations associated with DNA.
This publication aims to recount the progress of their dialogue, through reinterpretations of scientific tools and protocols and experimental visions combining drawing and sculpture, including notes and preparatory drawings.

In an interview conducted by Anne de Malleray (La Déménagerie), they look back on their investigation of the original terrestrial landscape in ‘Le rêve du ribosome’ (The Ribosome Dream) and its implications for our conceptions of the environment and living things. They also discuss the challenges of this residency, which intertwines art and science rather than juxtaposing them, and the uniqueness of their research method.

The publication includes an object, the Curseur de paysage, which combines scientific data and creative work, and is conceived as a possible way of producing knowledge and a renewed imagination about living things.
