This publication follows on from the exhibition Correspondences. Reading Angela Davis, Audre Lorde, Toni Morrison, which took place at the Centre d’art contemporain d’Ivry – le Crédac from 22 September to 15 December 2024.
The book brings together texts detailing the curatorial process devised by Claire Le Restif and Elvan Zabunyan, in which works by artists and pupils’ visual art projects engaged in a dialogue with one another within the exhibition spaces. In an interview, the teachers involved in the workshops share their perspectives on adolescence, reflecting on the impact this unique experience has had on their pupils and on their teaching methods. The issue of pupils’ freedom and autonomy is also at the heart of the Festival d’Automne’s ‘Cours de Re-création’ outreach programme. Sarah Clément-Colas reflects on this empowering initiative, which she has been running for many years, and on the special prominence given to children’s voices when viewing the artworks. Conceived by Julia Leclerc, a lounge area offered a moment of quiet reflection and musical listening at the end of the tour through the exhibition galleries. Drawing on the literary and political work of Angela Davis, Audre Lorde and Toni Morrison, an essay – accompanied by a playlist of 200 tracks – highlights the importance of words and music in the 20th-century struggles for emancipation.
