Réunir les bouts du monde. Art, histoire, esclavage en mémoire

Réunir les bouts du monde. Art, histoire, esclavage en mémoire is an encounter with visual, literary, musical and critical works from the USA and the Caribbean, which bear witness to the memory of transatlantic slavery. The history of slavery did not stop with the abolition of slavery, but continued with the expressions of segregation, racism, lynching, imprisonment, and social, cultural, political and police repression of the 20th and 21st centuries in all the countries that experienced it.

By invoking artists, writers and intellectuals who have based their practice on the irreversible rupture caused by four centuries of triangular trade, Elvan Zabunyan questions what this history continues to produce today. The survival and transmission of the memory traces of slavery are a unifying force in artistic creations, making dispersal and fragmentation an eminently aesthetic and poetic issue. The author sees the back-and-forth in space and time, and the omnipresence of a past that enlightens the present, as embraces shot through with affect, making the art history she writes a situated, sensitive and committed narrative.

The book is published with the support of the Centre d’art contemporain d’Ivry – le Crédac.
