The Methof of Constructing Political Truth

Alevtina Kakhidze

A Ukrainian artist residing in a war zone until very recently, Alevtina Kakhidze originally conceived the performance titled The Method of Constructing Political Truth for Manifesta 10 in St. Petersburg in 2014, shortly after Russia occupied Crimea. She returns to this work in the current context of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, which has also triggered a media war and where the question of political truth is constantly being asked. The artist then imagines, in the format of a press conference, The Method of constructing political truth: answers to polemical questions formulated from different angles, that of the tourist, the mediator, the activist and the gardener.
For the event at Crédac, audiences are invited to attend the rehearsal of the performance, which anticipates the presentation of its full version at the Centre Pompidou in September 2022, and to participate in a game. The texts will be read by Anti Gonna and Jan Bačynsjkyj, artists in residence at the Cité internationale des arts. At the end of the reading, the audience will be invited to imagine answers to controversial questions related to the war in Ukraine, adopting the perspectives of the characters in the performance.

The adaptation of The Method of Constructing Political Truth was proposed by the curator Sasha Pevak: invited to participate in the exhibition Tout dans le cabinet mental at Crédac, Sasha Pevak decided to leave his place to Alevtina Kakhidze, to become her agent of visibility and to serve as her conceptual and logistic link in France.
